Further south, burials were sometimes placed in a variety of extraordinary sarcophagi. Slabs were used to build cists (stone coffins) of increasing elaboration. Often these contained the collected bones of many individuals. Distinctive black and red pots, iron tools and weapons, bronze and shell jewellery were characteristic grave goods. Some burials also had elaborate goldwork.
